I had altered ~/.gconf/apps/virt-manager/connections/%gconf.xml to include the 
correct username but it took a long time before the changes showed up in 
virtman.


Your solution is far better though, thanks, I didn't know you could do it that 
way.

Sure.  The newest versions of virt-manager let you specific the user to connect 
with.

But, the older versions should (in theory) let you put in "u...@host" where it 
asks for the host name.
