This has been something of a mythical quest, but I finally figured out what was going on. I didn't realize that certain versions of Leopard would default to using the 64-bit fork of an executable if it had one. Thus, historically I have been targeting Snow Leopard with the 64-bit fork of the binaries. Now that I know that Leopard has full 64-bit support, I simply changed the builds so that the 64-bit fork of VirtualGL and TurboVNC targets 10.5 and later.
A new DMG has been uploaded to the pre-releases page. Note that this same problem existed in the libjpeg-turbo SDK, but I caught it barely in time to make the 1.0.0 release. It also still exists in the VGL 2.2 pre-beta DMG.
