Hugh, It occurs fairly often (~ 30% of the time). Here is another error, this time with the error diagnostics from the server. I think it has to do with the 'dirty data' issue, could it be that somehow some dirty URIs or labels got into the SPARQL?. I don't see any weird characters in the query:
