Uhm... DTMF handling is something I've never tested much, so you are probably 
right. I will test them before the next release, I promise :)

Probably it's just a matter of activating Asterisk's DTMF detector as hardware 
support is not yet implemented.

Ohh... you've just found the Pandora's box :)
I could easily provide timing to Asterisk, unfortunately zaptel is so deeply 
mixed with Asterisk's code that the only answer I can provide is "I don't 
know".

I'm running Asterisk without ztdummy and zaptel and I'm not having timing 
problems, however, I cannot exclude that the "zaptel optimizations" spread 
all around asterisk's code would be needed somewhere.
