+1 By all means follow up in private if sensitive details are involved, but just immediately cutting short the conversation with "Replied directly by a private e-mail." is very poor.
One thing I really hate is searching the internet when I have a problem, managing to find someone who had the same problem as me, only to have them come back and just say "Never mind, I fixed it!" without any details.
