Currently it looks like subconfigure.com in other cases writes a little C program and
compiles it to let the compiler's natural include search locate the header file, so I
guess this is what we ought to do. For iconv.h it shouldn't be to hard. Getting the
try.c for selectminbits working would take a bit more doing.

I'll take some of your guilt if you'll take some of mine ;-). Better yet, I'll mess
with the configure stuff if you'll write the conference paper I'm giving this weekend
