My guess is that recent lexer patching appears to have messed up the 
vms versions perly.[hc] since perl@7415 cannot build on VMS any more.
Was the vms/vms_yfix.pl script run after patching perly.[hc]?

Here is that bottom end of `make` (er, MMS) where the symbol S_SYYLEX
winds up missing:
