Well, having applied Craig's patch, 5.8.1 now gets past the initial make stage.
Logs of each stage are available from http://vmsbox.cjb.net/perl/ along with a list of the tests that failed. To summarise, MMK TEST failed 16 scripts out of 681. I'm going to go back to the information in the readme and run the more detailed tests, but I first want to try using this build to make Mark Daniel's PerlRTE for the WASD web server.
