But Unix does not have chained logicals, so there's no behaviour to be
compatible with.
What about UnionFS? I think that some unixes can have multiple heterogeneous file systems mounted this way, appearing as one file system.

OK, the paradigm is not the same as a VMS search list, but it may be possible for F::S::S's view to accommodate both in a similar abstract way.
