I don't recall what I recommended to Carl specifically, but I'll just reiterate that the general advice changed a release or two back. It used to be that the best results came from passing the -o or /ODS2 flag to vmstar, but now the best (or at least better) results come from omitting those flags.
The GNU tar utility that comes with GNV appears to work in some cases, and Jahn Malmberg has an even better one.
