The reports I heard were that Intel's infamous "Smoking Brick Of
Death" was running ia32 code slower than a 486. Not to mention the
alleged lack of an optimal compiler for ia64. Admittedly, the last
serious reports I heard were at least a year ago.

The AMD solution does look to be a much saner alternative. IA32
faster than the current generation, out of the box, and with a clean
x86-64 implementation bolted neatly around it. No prizes for
guessing which'll be cheaper, too.
