>I've heard this as well. Now, AMD's Hammer/Opteron/whatever they're calling >it this week sounds really tasty..... Mmm, 32/64 bit hybrid goodness.... The reports I heard were that Intel's infamous "Smoking Brick Of Death" was running ia32 code slower than a 486. Not to mention the alleged lack of an optimal compiler for ia64. Admittedly, the last serious reports I heard were at least a year ago. The AMD solution does look to be a much saner alternative. IA32 faster than the current generation, out of the box, and with a clean x86-64 implementation bolted neatly around it. No prizes for guessing which'll be cheaper, too. -- -------------------------------------------------------------- from: Jonathan "Chromatix" Morton mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] website: http://www.chromatix.uklinux.net/ geekcode: GCS$/E dpu(!) s:- a21 C+++ UL++ P L+++ E W+ N- o?
