For M$Windows: its the local screen that sets the limits. I'm in the
impression that the minimum color depth that is transmitted is 1 byte per
pixel. So putting the colordepth below 8 bits (less than 256 colors) does
not restrict the bandwith.

For unix variants: Xvnc can go as low as 1 x 1 with 8 bits colors. How
usefull that can be...
