Check the .vnc/xstartup. By default, it starts twm; you may want to change this to mwm. Alternatively, for Solaris only, point .vnc/xstartup to /usr/dt/bin/Xsession: mv $HOME/.vnc/xstartup $HOME/.vnc/xstartup-save ln -s $HOME/.vnc/xstartup /usr/dt/bin/Xsession which will run the same startup that the standard CDE login does.
