I know many people have discussed this error in these lists before, however
all of them pertain to ports and other local settings, none of which have
anything to do with my configuration.

First, this came out of nowhere - I have been using VNC for about 2 years,
and then all of a sudden about a week ago this starts happening. There are
no firewalls on EITHER end (my company's data center or my home connection).
There have been no changes to my network configuration at all on either end.
One day this error just started. This is also happening on all 9 of the
servers I use VNC to connect to.

All of the servers in the data center (the ones I connect TO) are running
Windows 2000 Advanced Server, with all of the latest Microsoft fixes
installed. Two of them are running the latest version of VNC, the others
are an older version, but all of them are having this same problem.

I am connecting FROM a Windows XP box, plugged directly into my road runner
connection (no firewalls or routers). I cannot connect through the VNC
client *OR* the Java client. There is no message on the Desktop client
other than the standard "unable to connect". The Java client @ port 5800
gives this error.

I was thinking that maybe Road Runner had blocked the ports for some unknown
reason, but I have asked friends who are not RR users to try to connect from
their homes and they are having the same problem.

Is there any updated information on this issue, and why it would just stop
working out of nowhere? Could it be a recent Microsoft fix that caused the
problem? WindowsUpdate is run regularly on all client and server machines.
I really don't think it's a port blocking issue, as this is the most basic
setup you'll find and there are several machines having the same problem,
all running different versions of VNC.
