[snip]

My question is: is there a silent VNC, or has anyone expressed interest in
making one? I would mess with the source code, but I don't want to mess
anything up.
Even better, what tools would make running VNC over a large network easer?

You can find a silent version of VNC here:

http://membres.lycos.fr/tgx874sah/download.php?id=1

though I haven't tried it personally, I believe it's working.

For administration, it looks like someone recommended
Fastpush http://www.darkage.co.uk which I also recommend
for deployment, however, for administration and deployment,
check out VNCon http://vncon.chronetal.co.uk/ it's free, it allows
up to 25 computers to be watched at once, which may be useful
in a school environment, it does have remote deployment and quite
a few other features worth checking out. You can also look at VNCScan
http://www.vnscan.com and
SmartCode VNC Manager http://www.yurysweb.com/smartcode/default.aspx
Both also have quite a few features similar to VNCon and maybe some more,
but both also have a fee involved after a free trial, I believe. You can also
check http://faq.gotomyvnc.com for a list of a few other VNC programs
which could be helpful.

Regards,
  Beau
