Hello all. Thanks for taking the time to read my post, I will try to keep it short
and specific. I would like to VPN into my home network from anywhere. Setup is as
follows...1 Win98SE (static ip of 192.168.0.101) and 1WinXP Pro (static ip of
192.168.0.100) connected via ethernet to a D-Link (DI-604) router (static ip of
192.168.0.1), router connected to cable modem (public dynamic ip of 67.xx.xx.xx).
Using Free Zonealarm software firewall on both PC's. The D-Link router allows VPN
pass-through. Is it possible to VPN with VNC from an outside location into my private
home network? I have read some other discussion's regarding this and see that port
forwarding may be the answer. Has anyone tried the setup below...any luck with it?
Thanks!

In order to get VNC to work on a D-Link router first get the most updated
firmware (2.10 as of 9/4/03) then you have to go into the setup (default is
http://192.168.0.1 in your internet browser) then select advanced along the
top, then select virtual server along the left and then choose/enter:

enabled
name:VNC
Private IP:<enter your computers private ip, which you can get from
winipconfig, or ipconfig>
Protocol Type: TCP
Private Port: <the private port you will be using. in the options you select
a number for "display number" (you must take off the auto checkbox) this is
equal to that number plus 5900 so if you put "1" in your "display number"
you would put 5901>
Public Port: <this will be the same as the private port to simplify things>
Schedule: Always

then click apply

to connect from outside of your local network (all the computers hooked to
the router) you must find your external IP address for your internet
connection on your router. Get on a computer that is connected to the router
then go to www.whatismyip.com and it will tell you what your ip is, from
here you can go to another computer that is not on the router over the
internet and type that ip address into the connection dialog like this
xx.xxx.xxx.xxx:<display number you set up previously> it is also nice to set
a password on the server.
