I had some difficulty in the past and Mr Hooper helped me out, so in thanks I hope this assists those on the list. Keep in mind that listening connections are basically normal connections, except of the different port number, lack of the need of a password and the initial connection originates at the VNC server. The server triggers the client to connect to it, the its a standard VNC connection thereafter, I believe. All loopback errors will be server issues, even though they express themselves on the client. (Thanks William, that was the part that confused me.)
My suggestions are more sanity checks than anything. Make sure you do not have the LoopbackOnly set to 1 in the registry on the server PC, if you are using standard unencrypted connections (not advised when you are on going across the Net). Have the server machine try vncviewer to itself using localhost and its NIC IP. That will detect what the loopback settings are allowing. Getting a password query is sufficient, you may then cancel. My experiments offered this: Neither AllowLoopback or LoopbackOnly will fail with NIC's IP or localhost AllowLoopback will succeed with NIC's IP and localhost LoopbackOnly will succeed with localhost and fail with NIC's IP Remember to restart the service every time you implement a settings change. Without the service running killing the server and starting it will work. If, using SSH to tunnel, be sure the AllowLoopback or LoopbackOnly settings are in effect. Remember these need to be Local Machine settings, so they belong under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/ORL/WinVNC and not in default or other users settings. If, firewalls and/or gateways exist between PCS, you need be certain the correct ports are opened. Generally, 55xx for viewer listening connections, 59xx for normal connections, and 58xx for the Java client. The xx is the display number. Usually 0 or xx = 00 for single client to single server environments. And finally, do not forget to check that local PC based firewalls are also passing what they should, such as ZoneAlarm, Norton Firewall and McAfee Firewall. This would include the XP firewall since the connection would have to transverse it to get to the listening viewer. If, these tips don't help offer more specifics.
