My advice would be to dump ZA, you're not the first person to have connection problems which are often identified as being due to ZA misbehaving.
Here's a recent article on home firewalls: <http://www.securityfocus.com/printable/infocus/1750> FWIW my personal preference is for Kerio personal firewall <http://www.kerio.com/kpf_home.html>. I've just seen that there's a brand new version out (v4, still free) - not sure what it's like but I can highly recommend the previous version 2.15. I'm using Windows XP Professional SP1 with ZoneAlarm and the 4.0 beta 4 viewer-only package, and I'm trying to connect to a Win2K SP4 server running 4.0 beta 3. When I try to connect I get the "attempting to connect" box displayed, and VNC gets no further. If I try to connect from my XP machine to the Win2K machine using the Java viewer, or if I turn off ZoneAlarm, everything works perfectly.
