I posted a query to this list a couple of weeks ago and found that I was
mixing RealVNC and TightVNC. I have since exorcised TightVNC from my
system and would like to try again to get my question answered.

I'm running VNC 4.0, using a browser (Netscape on Windows) to access
the Java viewer (on Linux SuSE Pro 9.0). With this configuration, tab
keys are swallowed up somewhere. I don't lose focus or anything
dramatic, they just disappear. I don't see any clue in the archives,
FAQ, or in the online documentation that came with the 4.0 package.

Any help would be appreciated.

Most likely, this tabkey is swallowed between the browser and java. Check your browser settings and java settings that they forward all keypresses.

However, maybe it is inside the java engine itself, that it toggles between the display and the buttons.

If you have a fairly static machine on which you run your browser, a vncviewer for the os most times adds a lot of comfort.
