I'm not sure I understand the second paragraph of your first message about the ports. But I put everything back to 5900/5800 anyway.
Are you referring to the Windows hosts file? I thought that affected outgoing connections. I am using a custom hosts file from http://www.richardthelionhearted.com/Hosts/index.htm. Could there be something in the hosts file blocking the java connection?
