Richard:

Please check out OSXvnc at http://www.redstonesoftware.com/OSXvnc

In answer to your questions...

(1) does the VNC Server run on Mac OS X?
(2) can a WinXP VNC client connect securely to a Mac OS X VNC server?
(3) will it authenticate against Active Directory?

1 - The RealVNC server directly does not work on Mac OS X, although it can be slightly modified to access ONLY X-11 apps, but for native Macs you will need OSXvnc.

2 - Securely requires that you tunnel the VNC connection through SSH (which is easily enabled on OS X by just clicking a checkbox). Connections between any OS/Flavor of VNC and OSXvnc is supported.

3 - OSXvnc does not support any authentication beyond the VNC password itself
