Why can't VNC 4.0 render a blinking cursor in applications on the remote
desktop? VNC 3.3.x
does this fine. When 4.0 came out I installed it and struggled with it. The
cursor actually
disappeared at times in Microsoft Word. It didn't blink in PuTTy windows and
sometimes
disappeared for long intervals. I became so frustrated with it that I went
back to VNC 3.3.7.

That was months ago. Yesterday I decided to try again and put VNC 4.0 back on
my work PC
that is running Windows 2000 Professional. I connect to it from home using VNC
viewer on my
Windows 2000 PC through an SSH tunnel over my broadband cable connection. I
tried every
setting I could find both in the server and the viewer. The one configuration
that finally *almost*
works is to configure the 4.0 server like this in the server's "Hooks" tab:

checked - "Filter out updates that have no effect"
not checked: "Use VNC hooks to track graphical updates"
not checked: "Poll console windows for updates".

The blinking cursor gets mangled a lot, but at least it is there almost all of
the time.

I noticed that if I connect to my work PC from another machine on the LAN at
work that this
isn't as much an issue. It seems to be bandwidth related. However, why can't
4.x render the
cursor as well as 3.x?

I've been monitoring this list for months and haven't seen this brought up as
an issue much,
which surprises me.
