Got it! The key for me was 1) my misunderstanding of the /etc/services file function and 2) the location of the error logs
The basic problem was one of my server arguments had 'wrapped' to a new line and was being read as its own parameter instead of a server arg. And of course that 'parameter' doesn't exist thus service fails to load. Told ya it was a newbie mistake. What burns me up is I have built and administered Beowulf clusters, but its been so many years I have lost ALL my skills.
