Paul, The "grey screen with X" is the default X server display when there are no application windows open. It sounds like your screen saver isn't running, hence you not seeing it and instead seeing a blank X display. Have you checked the server's log for error messages form the screen-saver?

If I kill VNC server and restart, all is fine again until the CDE sleep timer kicks in again. This never happened in RealVNC 3.x. This happens in both free and Enterprise versions.
