Heather:

Heya. If you are have administrative access to the router on
the VNC Server side of the connection, setting up the port-forwarding
you'll need for VNC is pretty straightforward:

http://faq.gotomyvnc.com/fom-serve/cache/63.html

Many routers also include a a "dynamic-DNS" client, to work
around the dynamic IP address given to you by your ISP. If you're
okay with setting up the port-forwarding in the administrative UI of
your router, setting up the dynamic-DNS client is pretty easy too.

One alternative to port-forwarding and dynamic-DNS, though,
is EchoVNC (http://www.echovnc.com). It uses an extra piece of
software called an "echoServer" to act as a relay between a VNC
Viewer and a VNC Server. So once you setup the port-forwarding and
dynamic-DNS for the PC running the echoServer (Windows or Linux),
all of your VNC Viewers and Servers simply connect to each other
"through" the echoServer, without any further port-forwards or
dynamic-DNS clients needed.

        Hope that helps!

I am looking to remotely connect to a computer residing in a local area
network that connects to the internet by a router. The viewing computer
will be offsite, at different location. Our computers are running XP.

The internet connection is DSL. Our internet service provider gives us
a dynamic IP address; if we reboot the router and log off we are
reassigned a new IP address when we log back on. We seldom reboot our
router.

Will I be able to use a VNC program if I do not have a static IP address?
How do I connect to the computer attached to the router? I assume the
router has the main ip address, do I type that first, then do I type the
name of the LAN computer?

I have played a bit within the LAN; I can initiate a connection from the
server to the other LAN computer with a viewer in "listen" mode. But I
cannot initiate a session from the viewer computer; either by typing in
the workgroup name or the lan computer IP address. I get a "failed to
connect to server" error.

I don't especially need service between the LAN computers, but if I
can't set it up there I won't be able to use the offsite computer as a
viewing pc.

Thank you for any pointers you can give.
