I was just wondering whether to answer this or not--I was going to respond as John did below (although my preference is to spend the extra time and get a minimal Cygwin setup rather than Putty). However, I can't believe that Martin et al have written a complete web conferencing solution and aren't aware of SSH tunnelling. Martin, is that really what you're asking here or not?

If one of the PCs is Windows XP, likely you have the firewall enabled and
that's blocking the connection. As Yann said, check the port-forwarding as
well.

I'm using VNC since years and I'm quit happy of the service. I only have a
small connection problem.

Trying to connect to one of my friend and I have a connection failed
message. I have the correct IP form the remote PC.

We tried connecting via direct adsl, dial up etc..and we still do not
connect. I tried to one of my pc..and it works..Where can I look on the
remote pc

to make seting adjustments..?

Tks

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your help.

We finally got this figured out. I was really confused about the response
I
was getting from ping. It looked like it was resolving ichabod to
ichabod.whrc.org, with an IP address of 199.92.170.34, but with the reply
coming from 199.92.170.121, which was the ip address I was getting from
ifconfig eth0 "inet addr."

I ended up going to our network administrator to find out how the network
was identifying ichabod. It turns out that ichabod's ip address is
199.92.170.121 (from DCHP). BUT the DNS server had an "A" record with
ichabod's ip as 199.92.170.34. So the reverse lookup file linking
ichabod's
name to the right ip address was wrong. Our network admin deleted the the
old record and made a new one pointing ichabod to .121 and now we're all
right.

Thanks again!

Karen,

The reason vncconfig doesn't get run by your xstartup file is that the
second command you run in it is an exec! After an exec, it'll never get
a
chance to run any commands, since it's been completely replaced by
whatever
script you told the shell to replace it with (in this case xinitrc).

Just move the vncconfig line before the exec and it should work fine.

Cheers,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

BTW, if you want to use the default FC3 desktop with vnc, you
can copy my
vnc/xstartup file:

#!/bin/sh
# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
unset SESSION_MANAGER
exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
#xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
#twm &

..and then to make the clipboard transfers work, in FC3, run
the command
"gnome-session-properties" and click the "Startup Programs"
tab and click
"Add" and enter vncconfig (if you'd like vncconfig to hide
itself at startup
use the -nowin switch, click "OK" and then restart vnc.
Unfortunately, the
"vncconfig -iconic &" option in the .vnc/xstartup file
doesn't seem to run
vncconfig when those 1st two uncommented out options are
used, you I have to
use gnome-session-properties to get it to work automatically.

If you have any further issues, you can write me, and

Subject: VNC via JAVA with 1 port only avail. HELP!
Date: Tue, 14 Jun 2005 13:13:45 -0500

I have a situation here. I'm trying to log onto my vnc server from work
and
have run into some problems. First, my work only allows outgoing
connections via the HTTP port. Normally this would not be an issue for me
because I've connected to my VNC server in the past via port 80... But
there's a bigger problem. My internet explorer runs a config script for
obtaining the IP proxy information and I cannot access my computer from
the
VNC Viewer as a standalone program. So that means I MUST log on via IE
through a java applet. This makes things worse because from the
documenation I've seen, I need to have 2 ports to successfully log on via
the VNC Java Applet, and security restrictions here only allow 1 port: 80.

So that's my situation in a nutshell. I have several computers on my home
lan, so if there's some way of forwarding ports or changing the applet
code
around and hosting files on another machine, I'm all ears. Any
information
is greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks!

Has anyone been able to get Xvnc 4.X to work via inetd on Solaris? I
have seen other reports here and on Google reporting the same issues,
but I have not found a solution.

The older Xvnc 3.3.7 works fine with my inetd setup, but I cannot get
Xvnc 4.1.1 or E4.1.6 to work. The only change to my Xvnc_inetd wrapper
script is the addition of the new required "-SecurityTypes=none" option.
I have also tried several other options as well with no success. I
get the CDE login window, which correctly prompts for username and
password, but then the Xvnc window quits as it fails to run dtlogin. It
appears that Xvnc 4.X does not transfer the UID from root to the user
correctly.

Has anyone got this to work? If so, please let me know what entries to
/etc/inetd.conf and Xvnc options are needed to make this work. It is
frustrating that even the Enterprise version of Xvnc fails to work
properly.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, but as you may have seen there are some users that don't know them

To answer: vnc uses the error codes.

By the way, any chance that file transfer will be included this year?

build X11R6 V4.3.0 from source and use its xdm.

Folks,

I recently upgraded my viewer from 3.x to 4.1.1. I'm
running FreeBSD 5.4, xorg, and blackbox on the
viewer/client side. Windows 2000 and WinVNC 3.3.7 on
the server side.

Before I upgraded the viewer, I only had to hit F8 to
get a pop-up menu and then send my local buffer to the
server. That option has disappeared. I have "send
clipboard" and "accept clipboard" options active in
the viewer, but it only seems to go one way (the wrong
way :) ). I've tried running xclipboard and even
putting the text into an enviroment variable
CLIPBOARD, both to no avail.

How can I paste from my unix machine viewer to my
windows machine server again? TIA.

still running 3.3.7). I run vnc on my freebsd box TO my freebsd box
(so that I can disconnect my at-work session and rejoin it when I go
home).

one thing that seems to have changed is the refresh behavior. I run 2
lcd screens that are logically joined (2560x1024). when I drag a
window. opaquely, between the 2 phys displays, I get some of my window
border still inside the client window. like a screen expose event
wasn't serviced.

this is NOT the case with 3.3.7 client on that very same box. that
version works just fine.

in the past, I had to deal with this with the x-server and had to set
it to this xfree86 config:

Option "backingstore"

I still have this enabled as it seems to be harmless (or, it helps and
does no ill side-effects).

I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed redraw events not getting
back to the client (in my case, an rxvt term window) in the latest
vncviewer?

I will try the latest vncserver, eventually; but I have a session
running there I won't want to tear down yet (been running for a few
months - hard to just blow it away) ;)

ideas? is this a known bug?

/bryan

Can you disable the VNC Server video when a client connects for remote PC
support?

I am running a small windows pier to pier network at the office. We would
like to allow 2 users from different locations to log into their own
machines at work. I have set up one VNC connection and it works fine, but
the second is challenging. I opened 2 ports on the router; 5900 and 5901.
I
set the IP forwarding to address the local machines at the office (setting
those with static IP's). On the remote machine, it seems that I should be
able to set the viewer to look for the second (5901) port, however no
matter
what I do, it always defaults to the 5900 port and the IP that it assigns.
any good ideas?

Hello James

It's Windows XP Pro. This occurs also if you wait a while. Only in the
first attempt it works not, after a stop/start (of the service) it
works perfect.

Martin,

Which platform are you running VNC server on?

Are you running VNC Server as a service?

Have you tried waiting a couple of minutes after startup before trying
to
connect? (Windows can delay startup of services for several minutes
in
some
cases!)

Hello

Now I'm very confused. After a restart I could not conntect to the
vnc
server. After stop/start the vnc server the connection works
perfectly. What is going wrong here?

Regards,

Is it possible to make the vnc as a standard service in linux?
My idea is :
1.as the system booting ,"vnc service" start up like other standard
service
such as ssh,sendmail,
2.before a request comes ,the "vnc service" does not start any Xvnc
servers
,but only listens to a port (for example: 5900)
3.at the client side ,do :
 $  vncviewer xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -user username
4. the server side get the user name ,and start an Xvnc server for the
user,

Vince,

You've missed my point. The error codes are just Win32 error codes with
the
corresponding error message text, which is the same as what the user will
see when an error message is returned. So all you've done is list some
Win32 error codes (most of which will never be seen by VNC) without
providing any extra information.

Cheers,

Yeah, but as you may have seen there are some users that
don't know them as
well as we do.

To answer: vnc uses the error codes.

By the way, any chance that file transfer will be included this year?

What have these to do with VNC? They appear just to be the
Winsock error
codes, most of which won't ever be seen by VNC users. VNC Viewer will
display error text corresponding to the error code it
receives, in any case.

Cheers,

Bryan,

You mention dragging a window but don't indicate whether this is a window
within your VNC server desktop, or on the local desktop of the viewer.
Can
I ask which it is?
