It's in the documentation. Unix versions of VNC server don't behave like Windows versions. They don't simply remote the actual display of the machine. According to the Unix nature ;-), the VNC server creates a completely new virtual X screen - by default it's screen number 1 - and connects you to this screen, and not to the physical desktop of your Unix box, which is the screen number 0.
