To that effect, I think we should remove all the hints in my proposal. We should add another pseudoencoding that can query the server for sizing hints. That can include both framebuffer limitations, how many screens it supports and lists of valid dimensions. This method would essentially be how things work in RandR and in Windows. They give some structures to indicate possible configurations and just give a plain "no" if you send something they don't like. This extra extension is not something I plan to submit right now though.
