Me to!
My model for VMWare (not $300, I'm a hobbyist running it at home) is to run
virtual machines like mainframe LPARs and then access the VMWare console
via VNC. It allows me to manage the vm's from the host linux environment -
disk usage etc (using logical volume manager ...) Kerberos is preventing me
rsh'ing, but give me time. If you mess up a kernel upgrade or something,
you can just delete the image and restore a backup. As a hobbyist, its a
match made in heaven!
Lets face it - #390 will buy you 512mb RAM and a Celeron 733mhz processor,
power is cheap. I'm not even running that. Why fill your lounge with boxes
(did I say that out loud?)
I also do all my other linux stuff over VNC.
If it worked, it would be great. However, the VNC server has a habit of
deciding to refuse connections and I have to pull the plug on the virtual
machines .... I really must remember to set up a login user.
I tried running win '95 in a virtual machine (best place for it!) and
accessing it via VNC, but couldn't get the graphics to work; It was all
pink, as I recall. Also, as reported by other users, the cursors don't stay
synched.
Graphics for '98 or NT might work better, but my application (quick fix to
find out ink levels in the printers I've hung off the server) didn't work
anyway.
have a great noughty-one.
Ben.

I'm using it. Works well. I keep Win98 running continuously on one of my
desktops. My primary purpose is to be able to run Quickbooks for
bookkeeping. I also do MSAccess development and have been doing all my
recent work on this platform. I've also run Autocad, Photoshop, and the
other MSOffice apps. It does take a bit of horsepower though. I've given
it 1GB and 64MB ram. Since the initial setup I upped the server RAM to
256MB to give Linux more resources and keep the virtual machine running.
This is on a PIII-500. I also use VNC, but VMware keeps me from even
having to turn on the Windows box upstairs most of the time.
