I got a similar result whenever I tried to use the xmodmap command
(a completely destroyed key mapping)!
Even when I start the vncserver on my Linux box and the vncviewer on the same
box I get this problems.

(Sorry no solution, but sometimes it helps to know you're not the only one ;)
