Gearoid,
These are FAQs. What you are seeing is a default X desktop, perhaps
without a window manager loaded - I don't know. The FAQ deals with how
to get your normal desktop/window manager running. In this case, the vnc
X session is seperate to the X session showing on the console.
If it's the case that you want to see the desktop actually currently
running on the machine's console then you want x0rfbserver which can be
found at http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/extras.html.
