I tried the single line command and unfortunatley I am getting a an
hourglass that sits there with a black background. I have tried so many
methods of starting CDE with similiar results. I suggest that a page on the
AT&T site be devoted to different start up scripts and methods.
I do think that half my problem is related to the fact that the server I am
connected to has no video card and therefore CDE has never been started
natively. The other problem is that I am not what one would call a UNIX
guru.

Here is the command I use (everything on one line):
Xvnc :10 -geometry 1280x1024 -depth 24 -query localhost -desktop
"$LOGNAME" -audit 0 -rfbauth
"$HOME/.vnc/passwd" -rfbwait 120000 -fp
/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/misc,/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi,/usr/openwi
n/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/,/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/,/usr/openwin/lib/X
