I am having trouble connecting to a machine that has 2 network adapters.
Setup:
Server machine:
OS: Win98 SE
VNC: 3.3.3r9 (same results with r7)
Adapter1: Internet access through cable modem (static IP)
Adapter2: Local access to LAN (static 192.168 address)
Firewall alternately enabled/disabled
Internet settings to use automatic configuration script from
http://proxy:8080, but "Use a proxy server" is not checked.
Symptoms:
Client on local network (192.168 address) connects fine.
Client cannot connect from Internet, gets "Unable to connect to VNC server"
error.
Client from Internet can ping server (with firewall disabled)
Telnet to port 5900 doesn't work (not sure if I'm doing it right...)
http: to port 5900 doesn't work (unable to display page error)
Add Client from server works fine (connects to client at dynamic IP address
through Internet)
The proxy setting is set by my ISP, I'm not sure I can get around that (not
sure what it does, either). At least two months ago, on the same server
machine, but before I put the second adapter in, I was able to connect using
VNC. I remember configuring the firewall (ZoneAlarm) to accept it. I have
since:
1. rebuilt the server hard disk, including reinstalling all software
incuding the OS
2. Changed Firewalls to Norton Personal Firewall (though symptoms are the
same with or without firewall enabled)
3. Added second adapter for internal LAN
Any suggestion for how to troubleshoot this? I suspect that it is a
configuration issue, not a VNC issue per se, since I can connect outbound
using Add Client.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
