I have a very basic question regarding the configuration of the 'xstartup'
script for my Unix servers, 2 Alphas running Tru64 Unix v5.1 and a Mandrake
Linux 7.2 system.

How do I fix the 'xstartup' file and any other VNC configuration details to
allow me to see the normal CDE display from the Tru64 Unix system and the
normal KDE display from the Mandrake system with the proper interactive
feedback to my 'vncviewer' display on my Windows system?

I have installed VNC v3.3.2r3 for Alpha OSF on the Tru64 Unix system,
v3.3.3r2 for x86 Linux on the Mandrake system and v3.3.3r9 for Intel Win32
on my NT 4 workstation. I have made symbolic links in /usr/local/bin to the
VNC executables' actual location on both Unix systems and /usr/local/bin is
in my PATH. I am using the vncviewer from the Windows NT workstation to
access the Unix boxes.

I have followed the directions from the FAQ (Q21) to modify the 'xstartup'
script to call whatever script normally starts the X environment on Tru64
(/usr/dt/bin/Xsession) and Mandrake (/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc).

On Tru64 Unix, this change does nothing as I get an empty gray desktop with
a cursor just like when the default 'xstartup' script is run. The log
reports the following:

On the Tru64 Unix system, my 'xstartup' file looks like this:

#!/bin/sh

# xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
# xsetroot -solid grey
# xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
/usr/dt/bin/Xsession &

On Mandrake, I get a KDE desktop but any xterm's or other tools I start does
not go to the VNC viewer's display but opens up the window at the server
console. The log reports the following:
