In my experience there are always some problems with fonts on HP-UX...

I find the most reliable thing to do is to run a fontserver on your HP-UX
system and execute the single command 'xset fp unix/hpuxbox:7000' so that
your VNC session uses only the HP fontserver. I didn't write the
vncserver script at my Web site, and while I've not had any trouble with
it, I also don't run Omniback, which you said is where you see the
difficulty.
