For history, see "Connection closed (yep, again)" After getting a monitor plugged into the remote box we discovered that windows update had done something to the video settings; the monitor wasn't able to sync up. We got the box booted into safe mode where a local person set it back to 1024x768x16bit@70hz and booted back into normal mode.
Problem solved, no more "connection closed" messages. VNC now works fine.
