Thank you to those who suggested that the problem was video card processing (which is invisible to VNC). Fortunately, Real's software has a switch to turn this processing off. Once I did that (and restarted the s/w --- the changes don't take effect immediately!) I was able to view RealPlayer over a LAN. (I don't think a WAN would work very well....)
