I have the same problem is Solaris. I started in Full Screen Mode and no keys were working. The keys all came up on the xterm where I invoked the vncviewer command.
I had to telnet to the machine and kill the VNC process. Pressing F8 after startup does not give a proper full screen and it also gave keyboard problems, I think. Looks like this is a long standing bug. I noticed similiar postings in 1999.
