or one could use a linux/unix/whatever (I would suggest some
slackware/debian box with everything but SSH firewalled and disabled)
gateway and the built in SSH gateway feature of tightVNC
(http://www.tightvnc.com), that way you can use SSH over an insecure
public network and set your clients to only accept connections from the
trusted linux gateway. This would be fairly safe if the network behind
the gateway would be switched wich most of todays networks are, and you
closely monitor the gateway box. However this setup still makes it
possible for anyone with access the VNC ports to ask the servers for
their password since VNC apparently evalutes the password before allowed
IP (wich seems weird?), I belive I asked about the IP/password thingie a
few days ago but I have recived no responce regarding that matter.
