we use TightVNC (www.tightvnc.com) with the built-in Java-Viewer for exactly
that purpose (probably this also works with the original VNC). Under the
"Advanced" button in the Properties screen of the TightVNC server you can check
"Automatic shared sessions" as connection priority.

After this, just point the browser to http://whatever.ip.you.have:5800/ (this
loads the Java Viewer applet directly from the server), enter the password and
press "Connect". That's it.
