If you've got a linux gateway going, why not use SSH and make a tunnel from your external machine and have the linux box forward that out to the NT box's IP address / DNS or WINS name. This is what one of my work mates does to control his home machine. BTW, if your NT box is 2000 - you should use telnet server to view service status, but telnet is insecure, so you'd probably only want to do that once you'd SSH'd into your linux system (and even then, it won't be secure locally).
