I've been using VNC successfully (but intermittently) for a few months from
Windows 2000 clients to a Linux server on my home office LAN.

Now I'm trying to to extend beyond the LAN and having some difficulty. It's
hard to figure out what is happening because I can't simply look at both
monitors.

The setup:
Windows XP running VNC Server (in App mode until I get this figured out).
This is inside a firewall, but port 5900 should be open. Windows 2000
Professional running VNC client. This is also inside a firewall, but
outgoing ports should all be open. I have ports 5900 and 5500 open in hopes
of having the connection work the other way too.

The problem:
When I try to connect to the server, I seem to get a connection, but the
viewer screen flashes up a window which then instantly disappears.

I can ping the server from the client PC. I can't telnet to the port - I
don't know if this is because of the firewall or what.

Could this be something to do with the screen saver running on the server?

This is probably trying to run before I can walk, but if there are any quick
insights into setting up VNC where the server is on the inside of an NAT
firewall (the home office) I'd appreciate it. Does using the listening
client fit into this somehow?

Thanks
Mike Pritchard
