Does the X follow your mouse in the viewer? Then you are about half way. Some things to test: After starting vncserver from the unix promt, also start a vncviewer from the same prompt to see what has happened. If this viewer gives the same view, my first guess is that `twm` is not installed on your system: Start an available windowmanager (mwm, olwm, olvwm or dtwm are some alternatives possible available on your solaris system) NOTE: start the windowmanager with the right display information: `*wm -display :1`. If you find a proper one, stop vncserver, edit ~/.vnc/xstartup and change `twm` to a windowmanager that is installed on your systen and restart the vncserver. Do not add the -display option here! Now the vncviewer should give something more. Once you are done, have a look at this configuration: http://www.sourcecodecorner.com/articles/vnc/linux.asp. It's not mine but this is how I realy like vnc.
