Hello everyone. I have heard a lot about terminal services on 2k and xp. I agree that terminal services has it's uses, but I still use vnc as it is just more robust for my situation.
Now the secret to installing vnc on a terminal server or xp... IS... DO it from the console. If you do it from the terminal session. The keys for the registry will be in the wrong place and the service won't work well. Now this person has it that if the terminal is open vnc works. Yep because it is hooking into the terminal session. My preferred method for installing on xp or terminal server is. Remove old copies of vnc and all or keys from the reg. Next AT the machine logged in as administrator I install vnc. Note I haven't rebooted. Next I install the service. Then I start the service. I get the vnc properties page. (I make sure it is the default and not current user). I enter in my default password. Then for the fun of it I reboot. Service now starts fine and if I connect to 5900 I get the console screen. As for XP I don't use user fast switching, and always log in as the same ID. (now adays I have a .reg file with all my settings for vnc in it including the password. So now I install vnc. run my .reg file. install the service. Start it and all is well.) I am a new user to VNC so forgive me if I ask something stupid. I just recently installed the server portion of the application on a WIN2000 server. I am trying to connect using a Win2000 Professional Workstation. I can connect just fine, but all I get is a blank black screen. I do not have any screen savers running. I usually connect using Terminal Services and here is the weird part. If I have a Terminal Services Window open and then connect to the same server using VNC I do not get the blank black screen. It works fine. However, once I have disconnected from the Terminal Services connection the VNC goes back to the blank black screen. Both server and client PC's are set to 1024x768. Brad Brad R.
