jargon aside... I'm running gnome, so the only screen-blanker I found was
Xteevee --bars with the "requre password" option,
(I assume if I knew what I was doing I could install a "blank screen" screensaver....)

(though I really don't want to burn in the virtual screen either. they're so hard to 
replace!)

(see above), I just used the gnome "start here" and navigated to "Xteevee --bars"
