I am sure somebody has answered that before ...
But Vnc was not designed for that - instead of characters it transmits
little sections of bitmaps

Use ssh (from windows AbsoluteTelnet for example)
and if you are looking for the capability to not really have to exit the
shell and kill the things you started use 'screen' within the ssh session
do a 'man screen' to understand what I am talking about
