2 tips on keyboard troubles:

On the X11/Xvnc side, start xclipboard to see what's actually in (which)
clipboard.
Use the java viewer, it has a dedicated (viewable!) clipboard

Then you can see what's going on.

X11 clipboard detail: there is more than 1 clipboard! (yes, I was surprised
too)
