For those who care about exact limits, I don't have the code in front of me
right now, but to my recollection;

 - The underlying message format used by Holodesk's MuTech handles messages
up to 1MB, and glib's anything over a defined threshold (under the
assumption that it's useful to do so -- not always true) which is tuned for
~56K transmission
 - The carrier method is a simple TCP stream, so there is that long wait for
the next message if you create something huge. (Sorry, didn't write that
part! :)
 - Our extended Living Worlds content messages have some additional
limitations:
   - MF fields can have no more than 32K elements
   - Strings can be no more than 64K characters (after conversion from
Unicode to multibyte)
   - There is overhead in the format for each field, effect maximum size of
"small" (<64K) message payload.

Caveot: I don't believe anyone's attempted sending a message seriously in
excess of 1MB. I know it works up to and just above that point (whereupon
the messaging library changes the meaning of counts in the packet to mean
"doublewords" instead of bytes) but I've never seen content that pushed the
range of 256K-1MB yet.

[1] Note: Blaxxun has a hard message size limit (300Bytes?), I don't try
anything over 65K on Holodesk Communicator (I haven't looked to see if
there's a problem there, Eric coded that stuff, but I just don't try it
anyway because Communicator is heavily optimised for small messages),
don't
have any information about the others, but the specification says
nothing
about limiting state size, so in theory they should all support it.
