The prosecution has told the High Court that 17-year-old Hasnatul Islam Faiaz will not be remanded over the murder of policeman Gias Uddin, who was killed during the quota reform protests.

The information was provided to the bench of Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Justice SM Moniruzzaman on Sunday at the hearing of a writ petition challenging the legality of Faiazs remanding.

Additional Attorney General Sheikh Mohammad Morshed said: Faiaz will not be remanded. A decision will be taken in this regard following the Children Act.

According to AAG Morshed, the High Court has yet to give an order. The court will give the order on Jul 29, he added.

On Saturday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shanta Akhtar denied bail to seven people, including Faiaz, and ordered their remand in the case filed at Demra Police Station.

After the High Court heard the writ petition on Sunday, the magistrate cancelled Faiazs remand.

According to his birth certificate, Faiaz was born on Apr 19, 2007. He got a GPA of 5 in his 2024 SSC examinations from Shamsul Haque Khan School and College.

The remand petition said that police Naik Gias, 58, had left home at 9pm on Jul 19 to go on duty at the Ganabhaban. The quota reform protests had been ongoing at the time. It is alleged that he was attacked as soon as he reached the north side of the Rayerbag footbridge in Jatrabari on a motorcycle.

He was later killed, and his body was hanged from the footbridge with a rope.

On Jul 24, Giass nephew, Md Fazal, filed a case at Jatrabari Police Station against 17 named suspects and unidentified others over the incident.

That night, a group of men in plainclothes detained Faiaz from his home in Matuail for questioning, his family said.
