server
As I said Charles, maybe what you suggest is required in
theory because
I have a few systems running /without/ the forced route and
they regular
spool mail for each other when machine are taken offline for
maintenance.
Our systems have have each other listed as MX backups and
each one will
accept mail for spooling when the primary mx is offline with
the equiv
of accecpt for relay but I use /no/ forced routes or other
directives
to cause mail re-delivery.

server
Hi Petar,
Ok in the below senario:
___________________________________________________________________________
(
INTERNET
)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
|
|
|
|
(your
domain1)
(partners domain2)
/
\
/ \
spool---main#1
backup#1---spool spool---main#2
backup#2---spool
\ / \ /
mailstorage#1
mailstorage#2
NOW, Accepting mail on a backup for your domain
is quite simple as the backup is configured relatively the same as the
primary, when a user receives mail, no matter which server it connects to
he/she will retreive their mail as the mail always resides on the same mail
storage
HOWEVER, in your senario, domain1 will be a
backup for domain2. therefore if we say accept mail for relay to
domain2.com domain, since we do not share the same mailstorage
area for all our users we must create a forced route to domain2.
Hence the C).
Unless I misunderstood your initial e-mail I
believe this is what you want.
SUMMARY:
- Two domains
- Each with main and backup
servers
- Wanting to be
redundant/fallback for each other meaning if domain1's servers are
down,
domain2 will be able to
accept the mail.
In such a case each domain must have a forced
route to the other to ensure that the mail is dealt
with correctly.
Thank you

Charles,
Why is C) required? I have backup mail working fine with
just
A) and B). Other mail servers we run also do not require
a
forced route entered anywhere.
Kirk,
If you peer with anyone then I suggest your offer to
secondary
for someone else and have them secondary for you in
return.
This is a good policy that could also include secondary
DNS
which would give your operation more uptime in event of
an
network crashing accident.
..Petar

Helo Kirk,
Yes, you can setup each others vopmails as
fallbacks. All that is required of you is:
A) an MX
record.
B) 'accept
mail to these domains' under security must have the partners
domains therein.
C) A
forced route must than be created under ROUTES.
NOTE: The following must be
remembered/taken in consideration:
D) The relaying
server will be more suseptible to scan attacks since it will accept
'all' msg to @domain.com.
E) FYI:
Ensure that both servers can handle the extra load
(HARDWARE).
Thank you
